Hon Richard Yates:
Dear Sir:
Some time
prior to the 4th of March, I wrote to you con
cerning the appointment of Gen Edward
Ball Commissioner of Indian Affairs
and in answer received yours, stating
that you "would be in Washington on
4th of March &c." Very well. Gen. Ball's
friends having discovered that the office
was promised to an Ill. gentleman
made no overtures to Mr. Lincoln in
behalf of Gen. Ball for that, or any
other position, choosing rather to
wait until the rush of office seekers
had somewhat subsided. We, as
the friends of the Gen, now ask
his appointment to an Auditorship -
Third Auditor perhaps - and ask his
most prominent friends to reccommend
him to Mr. Chase for such
appointment. Knowing you to
be among that number, I, as one
friend ask your influence.
The general's financiering abilities
are too well known to you, to need
notice from his friends. Please
direct your letter containing the
reccommendation to me, at this
place, and attend to it as soon
as you have leisure, as we are
anxious to send on as soon
as possible -
Truly Yours
