To the Honorable Gov Yates
Dear Sir
I understand that the President has called for troops to be supplied from the different States and quite a number from Illinoise this being the case I presume you will appoint some recruiting officers to adopt some measures for obtaining Volunteers if so I stand ready to assist for one in obtaining volunteers if I should be thought qualified for the business and am ready to commence immediately and do the best I can
I suppose under existing circumstances there is no time be lost and it requires immediate action in us a State especially that has given an honorable President to the United States or as as we supposed when we elected A Lincoln for the White House
Now dear Sir if I can assist you in this way just drop me a line that I may arrange my business which will not take but one day for I look on the preservation of the Union as the first business and of the greatest importance of any worldly consideration
Yours Verry Respectfuly
