Description
James L. Burkhalter moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania in 1856. In 1858 he married Martha Ellen Adle in Galesburg and began raising a family. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Burkhalter wrote Governor Richard Yates for a commission and successfully formed Company F of the Eighty-Sixth Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Joining as a private, Burkhalter was elected commanding officer with the rank of captain and served throughout the war, ending his tenure as a major with General William Tecumseh Sherman, well on his march to the sea. After the war he moved back to the Galesburg area where he died in 1908.
