Description

The Burkhalter family men pose for a family portrait. A large majority of the group lived in Pennsylvania, including James L. Burkhalter of Galesburg, Illinois (second from left). James's parents, David Burkhalter (1809-1890) (perhaps in the center) and Mary Ann Marks (1813-1882) had seven sons, one of which died at an early age. It is likely this photograph includes James's brothers David, David Franklin, William E., Wayne, John, and Charles M. Burkhalter.

On verso: "Pensylvania Dutch farmers taken about 1870. Ten brothers- a branch of the Burkhalter tribe decendants of Ruben Burkhalter, A Swiss Hugonot who emigrated to America 1732.
