Description

Richard Yates, Jr., the son of Governor Richard Yates, Sr., was elected Governor of Illinois in 1901. Governor Yates, Jr. worked to secure groundbreaking child labor legislation in Illinois but failed to attack political corruption. He was not reelected for a second term. After serving on the state public utilities commission and as assistant attorney general, he was elected to Congress in 1918 and served in that body until 1933. Working with his daughter, Catherine Yates Pickering, he wrote a biography of his father which was eventually published in 1966: Richard Yates: Civil War Governor. Richard Yates, Jr. died in 1936 and was buried in Diamond Grove Cemetery in Jacksonville, Illinois, the hometown and burial place of his father.
