Description

Governor Richard Yates, Jr. gathers with members of his party and other state leaders at the fair's grandstand in Springfield.

An article related to the event and attached to the photograph verso reads, "Ill. St. Reg. 8-15-46. Governor's Day at the State Fair in Yates Regime Was Always Big Event- For Fair visitors especially: Going back once more in our old files reflecting the color and drama of the State Fair in earlier days, we give you this rare old picture of a Governor's Day scene in the old grandstand around the turn of the century. . . . Governor's Day, then as now, always fell on a Thursday, when the Chief Executive, the other State officials and political leaders of the party then in power were special guests, and the program included speech-making and political pow wows in which party wheelhorses from all over the State participated. As a mile, too, the best race attractions were carded for that day, and all this was reflected in the attendance. . . . This picture taken in front of the old grandstand, probably in 1901 or 1902, shows Governor and Mrs. Richard Yates and party occupying the official box directly in the center. In this group, Mrs. John R. Tanner and George H. Madden (then Superintendent of the Fair) are also recognized, with prominent Republican figures standing in the rear. . . . In those days, State Fair week ran into late September and early October. This grandstand setting is quite familiar to older Springfieldians. Note the big whitewashed barrel of ice water in right foreground, from which old-fashioned tin cups dangled! Some world race records were hung up in this period."
