Chicago Dec 24th 1863
Dear Governor
I can assure you I feel quite reluctant to ask a favor from you, the kind manner in which you have always treated me places me under lasting obligations, obligations I can assure you I shall most gladly repay should I ever have an opportunity - as I was saying to you My partner (George M Gray) & my self propose to furnish Mr H H Forsyth some munny to go to Memphis to buy Cottin and send to New York. I enclose draft of about such a letter as I wish you would give me to Gen
Hurlbut. If you will write the letter & enclose it back to me without much delay I shall feel much obliged
