Dear Sir
I have applied to the President for the appointment of Paymaster. I should be glad to have that application backed by your recommendation.
I would like to be serving my country and besides, I believe I have claims upon the administration that ought not be entirely disregarded.
If you can consistently aid me in this matter you will put me under a newer
obligation. As Douglas wrote to Snider "for God sake come and help me".
