Head Quarters District of Eastern Arkansas,

Helena, Ark., Feb 11th 1864

His Excellency Richard Yates

Gov. of Ill.

Dear Sir,

This will be handed to you by my only son, Temple Buford.

He has been for a year past a Lieut in the 5th U.S. Regular Cavalry. He committed an indiscretion & for want of good advisers resigned. He loves the service & wishes to re-enlist it. He was praised for a gallant soldier, was with my brother in many engagements & was a prisoner of war for a month at Richmond.

As there is a call for more volunteers, I earnestly ask you to give hm a commission.

I am trying to do my duty. My noble brother died in the service of our Country. My son has some qualities fitting him for a good solider. One indiscretion lost him his Commission. I pray you give him a new one try him again.

Your friend, N.B. Buford
