Hon Richard Yates

Gov of Illinois

Dr Sir

You will find with this a petition for you to forwd the Commission of A J Gilbert Esq -

I understand that you recd a petition setting forth the said Gilbert to be a disloyal Citizen, and that he would not take the oath of office.

If this is the case I have to say to you that it was done by a few of his personal enemies. You will notice some of those who signed the first petition, have signed this they knew not what they were doing in the first instance and regret that they signed it -

We consider it a gross imposition upon your Honor as well as upon Mr Gilbert and we desire you, through your Secy, to send us a certified Copy of the first petition setting forth the charges preferred against the said Gilbert -

You will please forwd his Commission to D Rindhart our county clerk and oblige all

I am Sir your obt Servt
