Hon Lyman Trumbull
Washington D C.
Dear Sir
I am just in receipt of a letter from D. W. Lusk Editor and proprietor of the Shawneetown Mercury one of the few Republican papers in this Southern part of the State. Mr Lusk was among the first after the breaking out of the War to leave his old party associations and to work for the Union cause. He has ever since done good service to our party and his paper has gained considerable influence in Southern Illinois. He now wishes me that in order to do good service in the coming campaign he would need your assistance in the [shape?] of Public printing.
I have no doubt that his assistance in this part of the
State would be very valuable, and would be pleased to have you make an effort to get some advertisements for him as much of the public printing as you can.
[illegible] Very Respectfully,
Your obed't serv't,
Richd Yates
