February 5th 4.
Rev. Wm Stevenson.
Quincy Ills.
My Dear Sir:
Your letter of 21st December and that of 12th Decr also signed by Messr. Adams, Letton, Burne, Foss, Finley & Brown was duly recd and though not immediately answered has met thoughtful consideration. I also waited to procure reports from the field which would enable me to present the claims of our esteemed friend in the most favorable light to the President - and which I am now able to do. I send you herewith copy of the letter to Mr Lincoln, and have written to Senator Trumbull enclosing all the papers. requesting his personal attention in presenting the
letter and his influence to secure the appointment. "I am extremely desirous that Col Lasquess' eminent qualities and valuable service may meet the early recognition of which he is desiring.
Truly Yr Friend.
