To Richard Yates

Governor of

the State of Illinois

as I am not much of a scholar

and a rather poor scribe please excep

a few lines from me without farther

apologies. my self and 20 others enl

isted in Batery C Ills 1st light

artilery with the understanding

that we wer to be discharged

at the time of the expiration of

their old organization which

would be out on the 31st day of

July 1864 which time has expired

and the old men are relieved from

duty and are discharged and

gone home. We are still held in

the new organization and not all

are told that we are to stay

another year feeling ourselves

wronged in this we apeal to you

to know whether we are to have

our right or have yet to be

brought to know that the [sayings]

of the Democrats is true and that

that infernal dogma of theirs is

true that might is right and so

[illegible]

[illegible] a little green. We

had the promis of a county Bou

nty of 60 dolars but we have not

received it and Lieut Prescot who

recruited us and who is now captain

of the Batery has never explained to

us the reason that we have not got

our bounty nor why we are not

discharged and as money was not

what we enlisted for we have not

made much inquiries about the

Bounty. We have endeavored to

fulfill our promis to the govern

ment and have exspected them

to theirs if we are to stay another

year we shall continue to do our

duty as well as we know how but

we shall not feel so chearfull

about it as we would if we knew

that there wer some due

see that wee have our rights

who lot we are fighting to main

tain the rights of our Country

Will you please inform us by a

private leter whether we are to be

held for another year or not and

if we are why we had this [illegible]

and why it is not fulfilled

and so obliged
