Hillsboro Ills Aug. 24. 1864 Hon Richd Yates Dr Sir Your letter bearing date Aug 15 soliciting my influence in filling up the new Regiment of Infantry called for by your Proclamation of Aug 13./64 was received only two days ago. Although knowing the temper of our people (i.e. the friends of the Government) to be in favor of the draft as a method of raising troops hereafter, I did not feel at liberty to slight the appeal thus made. I have accordingly taken such steps towards the desired end as was considered best and the subject is now being thoroughly agitated in our County. I have called a mass Meeting for Saturday next when I hope to be able to speak positively as to the result. Although it is no small sacrifice or inconvenience for me to leave home at this time. yet I offer to do so if a de

cent number will go along. If I succeed in raising a company or part of a company I will inform you by dispatch that you may reply if accepted and furnish transportation direct for Camp Butler. If raised however, it will only be by the hardest efforts. Respectfully Yours J.W. Kitchell

J.W. Kitchell Hillsboro Aug 24th 1864 Says that he will do his best to raise a company or part of one but it will require great effort as the Union men want the draft to come to facilitate recruiting hereafter. Verbal answer to Kitchell File
