To His Excellency

               A. Lincoln
                      President of the United States
                                        The undersigned Officers of the Federal Army, in the Dept. of Ark's., understanding that Lieut. Chas H. Miller, Adjt. of the 106th Infry. Ills. Vols., and now Actg. Asst. Adjt. Genl. 2d Brig. 2d Division 7th Army Corps, is desirous of obtaining an appointment as Captain in the line or Staff of the Regular Army, beg leave respectfully to state;
                                         That we are well acquainted with Lieut. Miller, he for the last two years, having been connected with the Army of the Union, doing active duty in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas, with credit to himself, and honor to the Army.
                                          We know him to be deserving, and in all respects worthy, and well fitted to perform the duties of the above mentioned position.
                                          We therefore respectfully petition your Excellency to appoint Lieut. Miller to the position he seeks, or such other, as you deem expedient and consistent; and as in duty bound, your petitioners will ever pray etc.

I am well and personally acquainted with Lieut Miller and Know him to be a most worthy and accomplished staff officer and hope it will be found possible to appoint him at an early date
