 Dr. E.S. Herriot _

direct to A.M. Slater - Grafton ills.

I do not propose to endeavor to protect the Dr. _ I am not disposed to think him guilty of anything _ but I am prepared_to say that my daughter is not, and has not even had the opportunity to disobey any order as to contraband goods_
Her individual property - is taken with the Drs _ even to her writing desks, letters &c, - family presents and relics _ of value as such rather than intrinsic value_ The money taken really belonged to citizens of Jersey Co - to the amt. of $1000 _ which loyal persons will lose, if confiscated - I only wish to stop further proceedings until the neccassary arrangements may be made to secure

an examination - and rightful restoration of property to innocent individuals which I trust would result in the entire stoppage of all proceedings in the case _

above memo was made by Wm C Allen, Grafton. and handed to Gov. by Col L.F. McCrillis _ Sept 3' 64 -

Letter to Genl Paine Sept 3' 64 requesting investigation &c_ Mailed to Wm H Allen Grafton at request of Col McCrillis
