Toulon, Illinois, Sept 15th 1864 --
His ExY. Richard Yates
Springfield Ill.
Dear Sir:
Four years ago, I wrote to you, requesting you to make an appointment at Toulon, in that memorable "Wide Awake" Campaign, and I promised you a tremendous crowd. - Gov came; and so did the people, and Little Mollie Stark rolled up at that time 505 majority for Lincoln, Yates and the entire ticket.- Another Election equal if not greater in importance is approaching, and we are still a doubtful district.- Stark must once more overcome, Democratic Peoria's (which she failed to do last Nov) or unloose two Representatives and perhaps a U. S. senator.-
Can you meet the people of Stark - as early in the campaign as possible - and bring out such a crowd as no other man can. and help us secure two Representatives who will help to send you to the Senate in the place of another "Dick" who now disgraces our State by occupying a seat there.- We have not heard from "Tom" since the Evacuation of Atlanta.- at last dates from him he was suffering with Diarrhea and was much reduced by it. but was trying to do his duty.- Let me
hear from you as soon as convenient as to whether, and, when - you can be here. When I will be glad to meet you. if I am not in the mean time "grafted into the army"-
With great Respect and Esteem
I am truly Yours
