Springfield Sept 18/64.

His Excellency R. Yates.

Governor of Ill.

Sir. By the earnest solicitations of Gen. A. C. Hardin and members of the Central Committees of Fulton and other Counties, I have suffered an application to be made to the secretary of War for orders, or a leave of absence, so as to aid in the Campaign. I am here, as you may remember, to take recruits to my regt. and have no recruiting orders. The Authorities Who sent me expect in some way, that I will fill our vacant ranks. Gen. Fuller informs me that recruits and substitutes are now assigned by the War department. Can you aid me in getting men assigned to the 55th from the above named [Classes?], or from the drafts if I remain and give all my energies to the Carrying of Hardins district, and the salvation of Fulton County? If not asking too much, please address me at Abingdon Knox Co. Ill.

Gen Hardin has made application through State Cen Com. to Stanton. If you are writing to that department, please drop a word seconding the request.

Your Obt servant.

M. L. Haney
