Head Quarters 1st Brigade Cavalry Division
Baton Rouge La. Septr. 21st 1864
"His Excellency"
Richard Yates
Govenor, Illinois
Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a copy of your letter to the President in my behalf.
It would be ungrateful in me not to express my thanks for the kind notice you have taken of me.
While it may be proper for all soldiers too seek advancement. I trust that I have not been over anxious about it, or urged myself upon your notice improperly.
Should the appointment you ask for me be made. I shall feel grateful, should it not be made, I shall still be satisfied, and not be ashamed to serve the Country in any honorable capacity that will contribute to the suppression of the Rebellion
I entered the Army soon after the War began, and I hope it may be my good fortune to serve until it ends.

With my best wishes for your health and prosperity
