Salem Marion County Ills Sep 30th/64
His Excy R. Yates
Dear Sir
I have to-day recd a letter from Col Jas S Martin 111th Reg Ill's Vols Stating that their Regiment numbers about 500 and if they had the privilege to come home to vote they would all vote the Union ticket except about 20. Cannot you make arrangements to have them come home. This County will be very close and probably unless we get the Soldier vote we will be defeated and as I am the Union Candidate for the Legislature I feel an interest in the matter for my own sake but more especially for the sake of the County and the
[course?] of the Union. Do what you can to get the 111th reg home and if they come all will be well.
Yours truly &c
