Head-Quarters District of Western Kentucky
Paducah, Ky., October 10th, 1864.
To
His Excellency Richard Yates
Governor of Illinois.
Dear Sir,
I am extremely anxious to secure for service in this district all the troops that you Excellency may be able to send me from the state of Illinois. Well knowing the distinguished character which the troops of Illinois have won on many a hard fought field, I am always proud to have them under my command, and I assure your Excellency that I shall take great pride in so treating and disciplining any troops that your Excellency may send me, as to make them reflect still higher honor on your noble State.
I am in great need of troops now, and ask that your Excellency will send any that you may have immediately, and due requisitions for the same will at once be sent from Genl. Burbridge through the proper military channels.
I desire further to request your Excellency to appoint as Chaplain of one of the Illinois regiments. The bearer, Rev. Dr. McNeil of Ogle County Ills. He is a personal friend of mine, and has long been Chaplain at this Post, serving with zeal and devotion in his profession. I recommend him to your Excellency as a man every way qualified for the post of Chaplain.
With the greatest esteem
I remain your Excellency's
faithful friend and servant
