Mt. Morris Oct 14th 1864
Gov. Yates
Enclosed please find communication from Gen Meredith. When I left Paducah I expected to pass thro' Springfield the dangerous illness of a member of my family prevented. I hasten to mail it from this point. In relation to my appointment as Chaplain of an Illinois Regt, I have only to say that I do not, at present, think it desirable that such an appointment should be made. There is but one feeling in Paducah in reference to my leaving there, and Gen'l Meredith partakes of that feeling. Under the circumstances, I think it would not be desirable.
If you have any place for my boy, as 1st Lt. & Adjutant of any new Reg. I hope you will not pass him, as for myself I am afflicted - discouraged.
Very truly yours, F. A. McNeill
