Cincinnati Branch U.S. Sanitary Commission, Cincinnati Oct 18th 1864
Govr. R. Yates My dear sir,
I will start for Washington D.C. tomorrow morning, and will be greatly obliged, if you would send me a letter stating that my nephew E. Frank Henderson, private in 3rd Illinois Cavalry, has been in service for 3 years and honorably mustered out of service his time having expired. If you will please join me I will try and get him Commissioned as Col. in some Regt. of Col. Cavalry.
He will accept such a position, and immediately go to the field. I will be some time in Washington, and through your aid I hope to do some good for our great Country, in this particular dept.
Will you also feel free to commend me to Mr. Lincoln, as you know me better than he does. I have many letters from distinguished gentlemen to him and hope during my visit, to accomplish much for our Sanitary Com'.
With respects to your military family, as well as Mrs. Yates & family
