Sir:

Your communication of the 11th instant, addressed to the President, has been received, and I am instructed to inform you, in reply thereto, that the Department is using every means in its power to affect a general exchange of prisoners of war, and it is hoped that a release will be soon procured for Lieutenant Edward P. Strickland, son of George Strickland, Esq., of Springfield, in whose behalf you write.
