Toulon Stark Co. Ill.
October 24th, 1864
To His Excellency Richard Yates Gov.
Respected Sir.
Is there a camp or hospital in the state where the services of a chaplain could be rendered to advantage, and unto which I could be appointed. I have been with Gen Sherman from early spring until the latter part of September last. And my health has so far failed, as to compel me to seek work as a chaplain in a northern climate, or in case I should fail in this, to resign my position in the army. This last named step would be taken with great reluctance. Hence I address you, in order to avoid it, if possible. I suppose that I could be detailed by the secretary of war only; and if you can see your way clear to do so, will you request the Secretary to detail me for such work. I would like to hear from you at your earliest convenience.
With great respect, I am your Obt servant
