I have learned it is wise to ask in time. Douglas is desperately sick -- may die -- I trust in God he may not.

If he does I want you to give me the vacancy.

I shall not want it longer than till the Session of the Legislature.

Think of this seriously & remember that we have to strengthen ourselves now against all sorts of combinations now being made.

I will withdraw for you & urge it at the Session upon all my friends.
