Petition to Richard Yates

To his Excellency Richard Yates. Governor of Illinois

We, the undersigned members of all parties of the Town of Pittsfield Pike Co. Ill. would suggest, that your excellency appoint a Douglas Democrat, who is known to be a sound Union man to fill the vacancy, occasioned by the death of our honorable Senator, Stephen A. Douglas, and would respectfully recommend, that, if your Excellency should see fit to adopt such suggestion that the Hon. I. N. Morris of the city of Quincy be appointed to fill such vacancy. We think the early stand he took for the Union, the Constitution and the enforcement of the laws justly entitles his claims to consideration in this important, but painful National Crisis.
