HeadQuarters 111th Regt. Ills. Vols. Infty. Goldsboro N. C. April 13[?] 1865.

Hon. Richard Yates United States Senator

Dear Sir,

I see it announced in the Army and Navy Journal that I have been confirmed as Brv't-Brig. Genl. to date from February 28th 1865. As yet I have received no official notice of the same. If such appointment has been made and confirmed, may I ask you to see whether commission has been forwarded, and inform me.

I must thank my friends for this Honor. But feel that after having fought through from Chattanooga, and planted the first flag on Fort McAllister, that they will in due time have the same completed.

Our Army is quietly resting at this place, fitting up for the great and final campaign. I understand we will be off in twenty days.

Yours Truly

Jas S Martin Col 111th Regt. Ills. Vols. Infty.
