Hon Richd Gates

Springfield Ills

My dear Sir

My friend

Mr. Thos. L Cary from Joe Davies county

but now of Chicago--desires a commission

as 1st or 2d Lieut in the Army of the

U. S. He would freely accept a position

in a [Colorsed?] Regiment. Mr. Cary

has seen service in the British Army- Is

well educated and would fill the position

with credit. I know but little of the

manner of proceeding to obtain an appointment,

and consequently take the Liberty of addressing

you. Any thing you may do in this

matter for Mr. Cary will be duly app-

reciated- by Yours very truly
