Dear Governor,

I herewith enclose an application for a son of an old friend of mine. I notice the application has not been signed, but the endosement on the back shows a good recommendation. (look at the peculiar writing in the endorsement)

I desire you to write a good strong letter to the PM General and return it to me. also return the document enclosed The young mans name is Alexander Roberts. He was a private in the 65th Ill. Infantry and has been employed I think most of the time in the mail service and now desires a position in that comtry[sp] His Father is an old friend that will do whatever I require and my opinion is that if you will write a good strong letter for the son,he will get an appointment that will be satisfactory to the Father and Son and will not interfere with Senator Yates or Wm.L.C. [?]

Please ask Mr. Denmson if he cannot give him the Position of P M at Goldsboro to assign to some good point
 Yours Truly
