Dear Gen'l

The within is a firstrate sort of a man who says he has been elected to the Lieutenantcy to which at your request and without the knowledge of any difficulty appointed G A. Dunlap. It is a hard case on Coppage. What can be done. Is there no vacancy in your companies which he could fill? Is there not something you can find for him to do? I know you would not willingly do a wrong, but I think Coppage is a good deal wronged if his representations are true. Perhaps you can find as good a place for George and let Coppage have the place if the company desire it. Please answer.

Your friend

Richd Yates.

Gen McClernand.
