Dear Sir

I am about to start a distant Expedition under orders from Gen Sherman.

I suppose we will bring up about Selma or perhaps Mobile. To do this I am compelled by positive orders to strip this line of all available forces.

If the enemy have any sense or dash they will break into Memphis Fort Pillow & Paducah. If they are fools or want courage they will follow us to Dixie and get soundly thrashed for their pains.

The movement is no doubt with the risk. yet I hate to have a City & County that I

----

have commanded so long open to the tender mercies of the infidel

This trip over I propose to renew my tender of resignation and get home at once. I am rapidly becoming unfit for any thing but a soldier & that is a consummation that I do not at all desire

I send Miss Kate the best photograph I have with many good wishes & hope that in the whirl of events and the agony of strife for place & power some casual remembrance may be had of Yours Truly
