Gov. Yates

Dear Sir

Sinse I last wrote I have discovered some points which as a friend you ought to know and whatever I write I wish it expressly understood is confidential, I learn from Dr. Potter of our place who is examining Surgeon of this district in Dixon for the present, & a good friend of yours, that Jones U. S. Marshall Chicago is playing a game into the hands of Washburn, Camp the Port Master is one of Washburn' men under the influence of this man Jones. Camp says Washburn does not want to be Governor but the U. S. Senate is the place for him. Jones works in this way he puts certian men on the Jury in the U. S. Court and talks the thing up for the purpose of souring the people against you and in favor of Washburn I will tell you as a friend how he does it and I trust you will appreciate it as such he will say that your habits are such that we must send Washburn &c then perhaps in the same breath say you are the best man but

harping on the other thing such electioneering I dispise, this man Camp wanted to know how Ogle Co. stood I will tell you how she stands she is for Richard Yates first last and all the time Jones is also working in Whiteside County and in every place he can make Capatol for Washburn, I have heard that his friends say they can carry Cook Co. this must be looked after.

I think I can keep you posted of Jones movements in Dixon, Camp the Post Master is his right bower and he is not smart enough to keep it to himself.

I feel a good deal of interest in your behalf and should I learn of any thing that would be of service to you it will be a great pleasure to me in communicating the same

I remain Yours truly

James V. Gale
