Head Quarters 35th Regt Ill. Vol.

8 miles S.W. of Warsaw Mo.

Oct 21st 1861

To

His Excellency

Gov. Yates

Sir

I have been requested to add my petition to that of the commanders of companies in the 25th Ill. Vol. who desire that the resignation of Lieut. Col. McClellan may be withdrawn.

I have no other interest in the matter than this; that justice may be done Col. McClellan and that the Volunteers from Vermillion Co. have a fair representation in the Field or Staff offices in the Regiment.

I do not claim that they should be represented unless they present suitable persons for such offices; - those that are comparatively well qualified.- And knowing that Col. McClellan has been actively engaged in the performance of his duties as Lieut. Col and a good share of the time as commander of the Regt. since ordered from Ill. I think him a suitable person for the position he occupies.

As I used my influence to get him and the Vermilion Co. companies into that Regt. I hope you will pardon me for interfering in the matter. And I most respectfully ask that the request may be granted if consistent with the public interest.

Yours Very Respectfully

Wm P Chandler
