To his Excellency
Governor Yates.
As I understand that you are increasing the troops in this State, I would like an appointment as field officer among the troops you are now organizing. I have served in the regular army in Europe as an officer, if you wish any references as to my ability as an officer, I refer you to General Prentiss and Colonel Morgan under whom I served as Captain of the Turner Union Cadets from Chicago, at Cairo.
