Hon Gov Yates

Sir I appeal to you once more to aid if possible the release of my dear Son still confined in a Southern prison

Perhaps you recollect I wrote you in June last that Anson C. Tuthill belonging the 13th Ill Infty was captured by the rebels May 17th at Madison Station on the Tenn river 10 miles from Huntsvile Ala just six days previous to the expiration of his term of service I sometimes think were this not the case he would have been exchanged ere this

I have rested hopefully as possible that when exchanges were made at the end of Gen Shermans

campaign his turn would come But so far I have waited in vain And as the cold winds of autumn tell of the speedy approach of winter with all its sufferings for the unprotected you must know the thought is anguish for a Mothers tender solicitude for her child I think you will pity my weakness if such you deem it It seems easy to effect the exchange as we hold so many of their men Each so anxious to go to their own & it would save such an amount of suffering Could you not have some influence with Gen Sherman He has been exchanging of late men too that were captured since May Ive receivede a letter from a soldier who had been a prisoner my

with our son & exchanged July 18th Saying he was at Cahaba Ala & was expecting soon to be exchanged There were only 312 men in that prison It seems an easy matter to release them if Officials would attend to it

Soon after I wrote you I rec'd a sympathetic letter from Maj Hoffman Com of excha saying he would do all in his power I thanked you for it and feel very grateful for your kindness in answering my letter I am aware that I am asking much of you now situated as we are upon the brink of a political contest when every effort is needed to wrest our Govr from the hands of northern traitors But the thoughts of my suffering boy continually haunts me

The knowledge of your public character leads me to expect assistance from you

One thing more which makes my case the more urgent is I have a cancer upon my face which I think is incurable & is liable to break out again at any time, & therefore as you may judge enhances the anguish of every moments separation

I see by the Tribune you are from home now Therefore will wait patiently

Respectfully Yours

Mrs E. C. Tuthill

P. S. Should assistants receive this please preserve to hand it to Gov Yates
