Yours under date of the 21st with speeches recd which will be properly distributed
A press of business which has given me no rest has delayed my writing you the result of matters in this County
I was placed in an awkward position in the county nomination for member of the Legislature
My particular & personal friend Chas Kellum had been won over to Fuller & was a candidate & was backed by Stiles, Ellwood & others who were & always had been Fuller men
The other Candidate (Hampden) was a personal
enemy of mine & a tool for certain parties
I was desirous of defeating both & by getting two or three other candidates we barely succeeded in Nominating J. V. Randall who is sound on the Senator question but not a very brilliant representative
A little attention on your part towards him I presume will keep all right
I have lost some warm friends by pursuing the course I did, but I have the approval of my conscience (which I apprehend is more than most men can say that have much to do with nominations).
I was forced to expose Fuller & his aspirations & the expression of one of his friends that the Election of Fuller to the Speakership of the House would make him
the next United States Senator satisfied me what he was after
Look out for him he laid the mines deep & well in this county & came near succeeding
