Hon Richd Yates

Dear Sir

Yours of the 21st ult came safely to hand together with the circulars, which were distributed to those persons upon whom they would exert the best influence and many of them after being perused will be re-distributed

I do not know whether in any prior letter I have given you the thanks of this community for your kindness in addressing us in Oct. Permit me to do so at this time and to assure you that by your presence and remarks here, you have won a very large place in the respect and esteem of our people. Many who before that time were indisposed to act in regard to the Senatorship, after that time have taken decided stand in your favor. and you will find Messrs Ford and Webster. all right.

The increased union majority of this County over that of 1860 exhibits at once the effect of your labors here.

Prior to that time our people were very lethargic

but immediately thereafter, measures were taken to have every town canvassed and every doubtful person labored with

We can all rejoice in the glorious victory we have achieved and feel doubly proud of our own Illinois

Mrs S has been very low for some time. but is now recovering

With assurances of regard

I remain Obediently Yours

Holmes O. Sleight

Has received speeches & given them proper distribution. Returns thanks of the people there for your address in Oct. It had a very good effect, and decided many on the Senatorial question, in your favor. You can now consider Ford & Webster all right. The increased Union Majority over that of 1860 exhibits the effect of your labors there.
