Gov Yates

Dear Sir

I send you the Belleville Advocate containg a communication by myself and write you this note so say that your friends here are immoveable and are in no way responsible for the bigoted twaddle of a not very well informed Editor You may rely on Cols Thomas and Niles and I think I may say the same in regard to Metcalf for I took occasion to see him about two weeks before the election with a view to ascertain his preference for U. S. Senator I told him that it would be difficult to get our friends generally to vote for him unless we could assure them that he would be for you And he told me emphatically that he would go for you Hoping and believeing that you will be successfull and thus consumate one of the objects for which some of your friends have worked the past Summer

I Remain Very Respectfully

Your Friend

Wm S Thomas
