Adjutant Gen. A. C. Fuller

Springfield Illinois

Sir. Wm Calvert a private in 43rd Ill. Infantry was enlisted some time last summer at Springfield Ill.

He & his father reside in Sullivan County, Indiana.

He was 8 months in the Insane Asylum at Indianapolis, & has been crazy for past 18 months. Ran away from his father last summer. He is a minor & was believed to be insane while at Camp Butler. Some 3 weeks ago was sent to Schofield Barracks, St Louis.

His father is much distressed about him, and desires to have him brought before a competent surgeon and examined as to his sanity or insanity, and should he be found so far insane as to disqualify him for service as a private soldier, mustered out of the service & furnished transportation to his home at New Lebanon, Sullivan Co. Indiana.

By giving this matter your attention, you will confer a favor upon his bereaved parents, & much oblige your obt. servt., Wm Springer
