General Head-Quarters, State of Illinois, ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE, SANITARY DEPARTMENT, Springfield, Dec 12. 1864.

Major Genl. Rosecrans

Comg Dpt of the Missouri Saint Louis Mo.

General.

Applications and appeals in behalf of those of our Illinois Troops who may be in unfortunate circumstances are usually made to this Department.

I rarely find it necessary to trouble the commanding General in any instance in order to procure relief. In the case of Calvert to whose ease the inclosed papers refer, there would seem to be a call for the exercise of your authority, and in sending them to you, I think of you as a man and a father, as well as a distinguished Officer in command.

Believing that you will take the requisite steps in order to secure justice to all concerned.

I have the honor to be Very respectfully Your Obedient Servant

John R. Woods Col. & A. D. C.
