Chicago. Decr. 27th 1864.

Dear Gov.

I met here to day Mr Chamberlain of Galesburg who you know is a warm and devoted friend of yours. Mr C. had read the article in the Chicago Tribune in the interest of Mr Washburn and had prepared a communication in reply. Which he to day submitted to them for publication. They took his article and submitted it to the entire Editorial Staff - and returned it to Mr C. refusing to publish unless he would get your friends to endorse it and him as your friend. This Mr C. thought was altogether unreasonable and would not do that - he had written the article on his own responsibility and over his own name, and could not see the point of lugging any one else into the matter. he sends you the article with a note to the Editors of the State Journal - Mr C. wanted the Tribune to publish it on its own merits and his responsibility as a Citizen

Your friend
