Dear Sir

Will you allow me at this late hour to congratulate you (not on your success), but the success of the people the great masses and still I hardly feel that confidence that I could wish in speaking of the result which I sanguinely had hoped for. On account of the position taken by one Senator & Representative. The former had of his own accord assured several who had conferred with him that he sho Support you first and last & Mr Ford had taken a great deal of pains

to correspond with his constituents in different localities for an expression of their wishes as a guide to him in his final action. But I console myself with the fact as I understand they both admitted before the test at Springield that they went against or Contrary to the wishes of a large Majority of their Constituents. I regretted exceedingly, I could not be at Springfield during the Contest but as I wrote you rec'd a despatch from Philadelphia the Same day you telegraphed Judge Wait to meet a gentleman the second day after & then was necessarily compelled to go East & only returned on Friday last. I would also congratulate you upon the reception given you

at Jacksonville (which certainly was most flattering) not only to yourself but your friends & by the way in this neighborhood those Washburn men are to all appearances & by their admissions gratified with the defeat of their own man. But as you remarked at Jacksonville or implied "Contest Over" that all the bickerings pass & be forgotten. My Dear Sir I hope it may be my fortune to meet you before you leave for Washington but if otherwise you will Carry not only the best wishes of myself but of many for your future Success. May it be as glorious as the past. If Convenient we would be most happy to entertain you at our house. Shall be happy to hear of you & from you whenever Convenient.
