Gov Yates.
Unsolicited, on behalf of two fine young men in ranks as privates – of Pike Regt I ask promotion for them
Jas K. Worthington drops his College course at Cambridge & has gone in. He is a superior boy – as Mathematician & draughtsman first in his class – 20 years of age equal to a Camanchi Indian on a horse, a gentleman & energetic
William E. Norris is 25 yrs age, equal to any thing in a Regt or on a Staff.
These are Sons of my friends & I know them from infancy. You would promote them if you can.
No excuse is needed to my gallant friend Yates that I appreciate merit & desire its promotion. In my speeches I have pointed out Richd Yates as worthy in past times of promotion.
Your course meets my highest commendation.
Sincerely as Ever
Yr friend

Recommend two Privates in Pikes Regt for promotion
James K Worthington & Wm E Norris.
Both young men of good education just from college, and worthy of your favor. Refers to times when in his speeches he “pointed out Richard Yates as worthy of promotion.”
