Governor of Illinois

Dear Sir

The bearer of this Mr Daniel Mason is a gentleman entirely worthy of any effort you may feel disposed to make for him. We should be grateful to you if you would use your influence to secure for him the position of Paymaster in the army. He is not only a thorough uncompromising war man but a sound Republican. A vacancy has recently occurred here in the office by the death of Mr Josiah Gale. Perhaps Mr M could be placed in the position occupied by him
