Chicago Sanitary Commission,

Branch of U. S. Sanitary Commission,

Rooms No. 66 Madison Street.

Chicago, Oct 15th 1863.

To Hon Richard Yates.

Springfield, Ills.

My dear Sir.

The loyal women of the Northwest are about holding a Fair for the benefit of our sick and wounded Soldiers. It will be held at Chicago and will last two weeks.

From ordinary beginnings it has grown to be an enormous enterprise, and will probably be the largest affair of the kind that has ever been held outside of New York City. Not only the five Northwestern State so considered, but all the North is interested in the undertaking. Boston, New York, Hartford, Pittsburg, are all at work for us. Farmers are sending us their produce, merchants their goods and manufacturers their wares. Five Halls, the largest in Chicago, have

been engaged for the occasion, and still it is feared that room will be wanting.

Amongst other entertainments, it is proposed to hold a series of Dinners, and of evening entertainments throughout the two weeks. And it has been decided that the Governors of the Northwestern States participating in the Fair, shall be invited to the Dinner which will be given on the 5th Day of November.

i write to invite Your Excellency to be present on that occasion - to be in Chicago and dine with the Ladies of the Northwestern Fair on the 5th of November, as a guest whom we shall belighted to honor.

We hope that our Fair will be a success, pecuniarilly considered, but we are certain, that as a demonstration of the feeling of Northwestern loyal women, it will comfort and cheer our "boys" enduring the hardships incident to Camp and Field.

Very respectfully yours.

Mrs. D. P. Livermore

Mrs. J. H. Koge.

Mrs E. C. Henshaw.
