Dr Sir I write to ask of you a personal favor for a friend of Mine which will contribute to the comfort of some of the Noble Boys who so Gallantly bear the old Flag in the Army of the Potomac & to Nobly Sustain the honor of our State.
Marcus White Esq of Garden Prairie McHenry Country, who is an old Settler & well acquainted with a large number of the soldiers in the 8th Cavalry is intending to visit Washington & the Army in that vicinity. He is a farmer Very well off, eminently fitted by education & habits of life do the Boys good, & Ernestly desirous to be of as Much Service to the Country as possible, & especially so in Caring for the Sick & wounded of our Boys.
He will be much better able to do it if he can be furnished by your Excellency with such pass as will enable him to go on Government Trains & Transports, where it is possible. He Does not ask for pay, as he expects to bear his own expenses, but merely for facilities, such as are Consistent with Army rules & the best interests of the Service. Of course if you have any Commissions that you desire Executed

on behalf of the State, he would be eminently qualified to fill them. He visited the Army last winter after the battle of Fredericksburgh & was privileged to cheer the heart of many of the sick & Wounded after that terrible Slaughter.
I do hope you will give him all the facilities possible & thereby enable him to do all the good he can
