B.F. Brockett letter 6/18/64
Head Qtrs 87th Regt Ill Mounted Infty
Vermillion Bayou La Nov 14 '63
To his Excellency
The Gov. of the State of Illinois
The bearer Benjamin Brockett Jr enlisted in Co I of this Regiment on the 15th of August 1862 and was mustered as a sergeant on the 22nd of Sept 1862
He was promoted to Orderly Sergeant of said Company which Position he held for several months. In February last a vacancy occurred in the Company by the Resignation of the Captain The first and second leiutenants, were provided, and he was commissioned by you as 2nd. Lt in said Company the Commission bearing date March 6th 1863 He immediately enterd upon the duties of the office, and continued to perform them though not mustered until about the last of July 1863 when he was discharged by Order of Genl. E. O C Ord Commanding the 13th Army Corps for the purpose of being mustered as Lt. His Company however being small the mustering officer refused to muster him and he went Home.
I can say for him that he is an upright
honest man, was an efficient Orderly Sergeant, and while acting as a commissioned officer under my command performed his duties to my entire satisfaction, I am well satisfied he will be an efficient man wherever placed, and it would afferd me pleasure to know of his obtaining a position anywhere, and if there are places to be filled in the military service of the State or elsewhere I believe no better appointment than he could be well made
I am very Respectfully
Your Excellency's Obt Sevt
