Vermilliion. Edgar Co.
Ills. Jan 8". 1864
To His Excellency, Gov Yates,
Dear Sir,
There is a very poor but honest man living on my farm here by the name of John Konkle, who has three sons (his only help) in the army. He recd a letter a few days since from the oldest from Chattanooga, in which he stated that some time previous he had sent his father $20.00 by the state Agent. If there is any man acting in such capacity will you please hand him this note that the money may be ford. to him - if not already sent - at his earliest convenience, or looked after if sent and miscarried. Mr Konkle's address is as mine above - Box 73.
Very Truly Yours
J. W. Crampton.

A dispatch came to Paris yesterday stating that there was another fresh call for troops. If it be so and they are to be raised if possible by volunteering, I have a generous plan to propose, by which with your influence, I think I can raise a Regiment in a short time and many more it seems to me ought soon to be raised in the same manner.
Yours &c
