Vicksburg Miss January the 17th 1864

Dear Sir. I a private soldier of the 11th Ills infantry Co. C. I am not in good health I have a wife and six small children that must suffer without my help my wages is by no means sufficient for them to live on I am nearly past age to be in the service I have two sons in the 11th Ills and one in the 60th Ills Regt My dear Sir if you can so arrange matters for me to return home to my family I will take it as a great favour I have been in the service about 18 months I enlisted in the 109th Ills but am not one of those that deserted I would be well satisfied to stay were it not for my family at home


Remember thare s four of us from one family near anna Ills please drop me a line I Remain your friend as ever
